Adult Class Descriptions

Classes for Adults

Beginning I: This course introduces chapters 1 to 5 of the textbook Studio Italiano. Students build a basic vocabulary, study the present tense of common verbs and basic rules of grammar. There is an emphasis on pronunciation and idomatic expressions for practical communication in Italian and interaction between students through peer coaching and dialog. There is also an introduction to the geography, people and culture of Italy.

Beginning II: This course introduces chapters 6 to 9 of the textbook Studio Italiano. Students expand their vocabulary, study past tenses, pronouns, and reflexive verbs, and continue grammar studies. There is an emphasis on basic conversation and expanding students' knowledge of Italian culture.

Intermediate I: This course introduces chapters 10 to 13 of the textbook Studio Italiano. Students express ideas, thoughts, and feelings in Italian, and review grammar in depth. Students expand their knowledge of grammar, and study future and conditional tenses. Students read Italian texts, and listen and watch audio and video presentations.

Intermediate II: This course introduces chapters 14 to 18 of the textbook Studio Italiano. Students study advanced grammatical structures and tenses including passato remoto, condizionale, and congiuntivo. There is an emphasis on conversation, and comprehension through reading articles in Italian. Students listen and watch audio and video presentations.

Advanced Conversation: This course is adapted to the particular needs of students with a good command of the Italian language. There is no textbook for the course. Students read selected materials and discuss topics of general interest including Italian history, politics, social conditions, culture, and their personal experiences. Students are encouraged to discuss their personal views, beliefs, attitudes, and observations about language and communication. Students listen and watch audio and video presentations at a level comparable to conversations between Italian native language speakers.

Advanced Literature: This course is adapted to the particular needs of students with a good command of the Italian language. There is no textbook for the course. Students read selected short novels, short stories, or other reading materials outside of class and discuss the reading during subsequent class sessions. Students also read short selections in class and discuss topics of general interest, their views on a variety of subjects, and their personal experiences. Students listen and watch audio and video presentations at a level comparable to conversations between Italian native language speakers. In the spring 2010 semester, the class will read Giro di vento, by Andrea De Carlo (see book). The book is provided to enrolled students and there is an $18 materials fee for the course.
